CAN'T PAY, WON'T PAY
by Dario Fo
Granary Theatre / 3 - 6 November / €8 & €6
Can't Pay? Won't Pay! by Dario Fo is an hilarious, sharply satirical take on individual responsibility and politics. The play centres around a community that has had enough. After months of not being able to afford rent, bills, food and the cost of living not improving, a group of women decide to tackle issues head on by paying what they want for their shopping – NOTHING! The plot concerns their efforts to conceal their bold decisions from their men folk and the police, who are all blundering figures of fun.
Economic crisis, price increases, religion, feminism, the ineffectual nature of the police force as well as a general dissatisfaction with the state are highlighted by Fo's relentless use of farce, ridicule and slapstick comedy.
Dario Fo (winner of the 1997 Nobel Prize in Literature) is Italy's leading contemporary playwright and performer, renowned throughout the world for his dazzling radical satires.
Written in Italy in 1974, Can't Pay? Won't Pay! is as painfully relevant and riotously funny today as ever.
